Our History
irst bands in the club were the Irish Rovers, Benn Brothers and Bartley Coyne. All show bands came from Ireland, Brendan Boyer, Big Eight, Big Tom, Margo, Daniel O Donnell, The Chieftains, Foster and Allan, Johnny McEvoy, The Wolftones plus many more.
There was also a sports day held in the early 80's with a large Irish theme. There was 32 cars with the flags of the 32 counties, Hurling, Gaelic football, cycling and running plus Irish dancers from the Jackie Kelly school within the club and music provided by Paddy Conroy and jimmy Campbell all on the back of a float.
The day was open by Steve Perryman of Tottenhan, all proceeds of the day going to Mencap.
The Irish youth footballers had Tony Casscarino, Jim Beglan and Allan McDonald presenting their trophies over the years.
The senior football team from day one to the present day have always served and represented the club with great pride.
Over the years, the club at the annual dinner dance was always attended by the Irish ambassodor, the mayor, Ken Livingstone and other dignataries, the head of C.I.D used to play the accordion for the senior citizens party. Frank Conroy always welcomed everybody in gaelic which was great as its our native language.
The club has been involved with all charities and continoues to support the church, local hospitals and the handicapped, and over the years held benefit dances for good causes. These were mostly run by Eugene O Driscoll
The club always prides itself on a good atmosphere.
Many plays were put on over the years. Juno and the Peacock with Mary Gibbons R.I.P playing a fantastic part as the leading lady.
Father Casey now Bishop Casey was instrumental in the setting up and the running of the club and was the first person to start the Slough homeless Association.
Slough Irish Club is an excellent place to bring your family, meet new friends and have a good cheer.
